Dance For A Change

Caribbean Dance and Drum Class

Dance instructor, Shereen Manalani Jarrett, fell in love with Trinidad's Folkloric dance styles and rhythms, that have evolved from the merging of African and South American cultures. Her passion led her to 14 years of studying under internationally known dance master, Trinidad's Wilfred Mark. Shereen still loves attending his dance classes in Palo Alto. Drum instructor, Steve Eldridge, has been playing music since childhood. He too became captivated by Trinidad's rhythmic drive and studied under internationally known Caribbean drum masters including Hugh Humphrey and Val Serrant. Children and adults alike have benefitted from Steve's teaching style and years of experience. Come at 7:00p.m. and learn the basic rhythms which will be used for the dance class, which begins at 7:30 p.m. Dance and/or drum. Join other wonderful percussionists and try it for the first time, or practice your chops if you're more advanced. Bring your drum or percussion instrument. Some extra drums will be provided. Classes welcome all creeds, genders, ages, ethnicities and ability levels. You just might get hooked on this fun, exciting way to dance and play. Don't miss this chance!

Showcase of Indian Folk Dances

Xpressions, a dance group with a difference, specializes in presenting traditional and contemporary folk and semi classical dances from India. We explore and experiment in order to learn and present the incredible cultures of India through a combination of dance, drama, music, and storytelling. We invite you to glimpse and join the festival of Indian Folk Dances at our studio and get mesmerized with the vibrant colors, music and festivity that make the folk dances so unique. Dances being presented include the Ghoomar, Raas, Garba, Bhangra, Giddha, Kavadi, Kargattam, Kummi etc. The session will also include a Q&A on Indian Folk Dances and guests can learn a short folk dance.

Odissi Demonstration and Beginners Workshop

Guru Shradha welcomes those who are interested to learn more about Odissi dance through this lecture/demonstration and Beginners Workshop. Odissi Classical Dance hails from the state of Orissa in Eastern India. Its spirituality stems from its roots in the temple and the dance is characterized by its grace, sculpturesque poses, fluid upper body movements juxtaposed with strong footwork. Director Niharika Mohanty and students of Guru Shradha will be demonstrating and inviting the participants to join in experiencing this dance style.
